Discrete and Global Symmetries in Particle Physics
I begin these lectures by examining the transformation properties of quantum elds under the discrete symmetries of Parity, P, Charge Conjugation, C, and Time Reversal, T. With these results in hand, I then show how the structure of the Standard Model helps explain the conservation/violation of these symmetries in various sectors of the theory. This discussion is also used to give a qualitative ...
متن کاملThe Discrete Symmetries of Elementary Particle
The discrete symmetries P, C and T are discussed in terms of Lie algebra extensions of the Poincare Lie algebra. This formulation leads to certain problems of Lie algebra theory which will be presented in this and succeeding papers. متن کاملBroken Symmetries in the Entanglement of Formation
We compare some recent computations of the entanglement of formation in quantum information theory and of the entropy of a subalgebra in quantum ergodic theory. Both notions require optimization over decompositions of quantum states. We show that both functionals are strongly related for some highly symmetric density matrices. Indeed, for certain interesting regions the entanglement of formatio...
متن کاملAnomalies and discrete chiral symmetries
The quantum anomaly that breaks the U(1) axial symmetry of massless multi-flavored QCD leaves behind a discrete flavor-singlet chiral invariance. With massive quarks, this residual symmetry has a close connection with the strong CP-violating parameter theta. One result is that if the lightest quarks are degenerate, then a first order transition will occur when theta passes through pi. The resul...
متن کاملSymmetries in discrete-time mechanics
Based on a general formulation for discrete-time quantum mechanics, introduced in 1], symmetries in discrete-time quantum mechanics are investigated. It is shown that any classical continuous symmetry leads to a conserved quantity in classical mechanics, as well as quantum mechanics. The transformed wave function, however, has the correct evolution if and only if the symmetry is nonanomalous.
